BASE AND HANDLE MUST BE ASSEMBLED BEFORE WEAVING THIS BASKET

Materials

Peanut Base w/Handle
1/2" Flat Flat - spokes & rims
3/16" Flat Oval - weavers & lashing
1/4" Flat Flat dyed - weavers

7mm Flat Flat - rim row
Seagrass - rim filler
Wood Glue

ASSEMBLY OF BASE & HANDLE

Use a fine sandpaper for any necessary sanding. Put a line of glue into the slot in the center of the base. Press the handle firmly in place making sure it is centered and square to the base. Tap lightly with a hammer. Let dry several hours, then stain if desired. I used Maple Weaver's Stain.

Cut 36 spokes from 1/2" FF each 7" long. If the groove in your base is too narrow to insert the spokes, run sandpaper around the groove several times, and/or sand down the end of each spoke (you want a tight fit).

STEP 1: Start by inserting a spoke at the handle. The next 3 spokes to the left of the handle will lay across the handle spoke until they are bent up straight (see diagram - try to visualize the angle of the spokes once they are bent up).

STEP 2:Insert 3 spokes to the right of the handle in the same manner. Repeat this process on the other side of the basket. Insert the remaining 22 spokes, spacing them evenly around the base (11 spokes on each side).

Slightly dampen the spokes as you upset them. Weave 2 rows start & stop of 3/16" FO. The first row must be woven on the OUTSIDE of the handle. Pack well. As you weave, push inward on the "handle spokes". Continue to weave the following rows start and stop: 2 rows 1/4" FF dyed, 9 rows 3/16" FO, 2 rows 1/4" FF dyed, 1 row 3/16" FO, 1 row 7mm FF (rim row).

Pack well again and cut and tuck spokes. Rim with 1/2" FF inside and outside, seagrass between rims, and lash with 3/16" FO. While my basket was still damp, I used a rubber band to help hold the sides close to the handle until it dried. Using a light hammer, tack 1 escutcheon pin (included with base) through the "handle spoke" into the wood upright (I did mine the row below the rim). Repeat on the opposite side.

All materials to make this basket are available at NC Basket Works.
